View of “David von Schlegell,” 2012.China Art Objects Galleries is proud to present the second California exhibition of work from the American abstract sculptor and painter David von Schlegell (1920-1992) since the year of his death. Curated with the help of his son, writer Mark von Schlegell, his daughter-in-law, artist R.H. Quaytman, and his wife, poet Susan Howe, the exhibition presents a number of von Schlegell's late monochrome paintings, a selection of his drawings, models, and maquettes to provide an overview of an extraordinary prolific life in art.
Throughout the 60s and early 70s von Schlegell appeared in numerous prestigious exhibitions including the Jewish Museum's "Primary Structures" exhibition of 1966, the 1966 Whitney Biennial where he presented his "Radio-Controlled Sculpture", and "American Sculpture of the Sixties" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. After he produced Boston's acclaimed "India Wharf Project" in 1972, von Schlegell designed and built public sculptures throughout the United States for the next two decades (Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Tulsa, Sacramento, etc.) while maintaing a New York presence with increasingly odd and idiosyncratic exhibitions at Pace Gallery.
In 1972, von Schlegell became acting director of the Yale Sculpture Program, a position he would continue to hold for much of the rest of his life. Here he had time and space to concentrate on his idiosyncratic concern with nature and sculpture's role in the environment outside the gallery. "In much of the given world," the artist wrote, "there is an early morning freshness that is forever getting lost. Art, which is all about attention, astonishment and an alive consciousness, should oppose this erosion"
